HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables have many different levels of quality in the manufacture of the cables. This is one of those situations where it's true that you get what you pay for in the quality of each cable individually.
Maybe we need to review what an HDMI cable is and why we should care about the quality of it. This type of cable carries a digital signal carrying picture and sound information from one electronic component to another electronic component. This digital signal is much cleaner and not affected by interference like a analog cable might be subject to. HDMI is like a CAT5 Ethernet cable because there are four shielded twisted pairs of wire in order to process the signal from the source to whatever is receiving it.

As a digital signal it is less prone to interference or environmental signal degradation than an analog connection is. In general the signal has a better throughput than analog from end to end. Since it is a digital signal, the receiver can recover the transmitted digital information more readily than an analog receiver could. This means that when there is signal degradation along a length of HDMI cable the data is more readily recovered by the receiver than with analog.
Not all cables are equal, as the quality control in the manufacture of the cables and connectors can vary with each brand. Since each of the twisted pair of wires has to carry its portion of the digital information, then broken strands or impurities in the wire can degrade the signal. The shielding may also cause interference between the twisted pairs if it does not uniformly cover the wires it is supposed to sheath. High quality connectors are also important in that if there is any inconsistency in the linkage at the connector then the signal could degrade or fail.
Most of the electronic equipment for consumers available now has connectability available for the HDMI cables instead of the Component (analog) connectors. Since HDMI has the capability of carrying audio and video which makes it much simpler to connect as you don't have to do separate connectors and ports for the audio and video like it used to be with analog. Even though those analog cables have color coding to help with hookup it's still sometimes complicated with all the cables, especially compared to the simple single port connection for the HDMI.
